Tottenham Will Join the Race for Leighton Baines

Tottenham will rival Manchester United for the signing of Leighton Baines in January, writes Dave Kidd of the Sunday People.

Baines has been left in limbo at Everton since the club rejected an offer from United in August and talks over a new £75,000-a-week deal at Goodison have been put on hold.

United boss David Moyes is still keen to be reunited with his former Everton favourite and wants to make another bid for the England defender in the next transfer window.

But Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas is also monitoring the Baines saga and could be willing to enter the bidding now that chairman Daniel Levy has thrown off the financial shackles. Spurs signed seven players in the summer but still want a striker and a left-back.

Danny Rose is the first-choice left-sided defender at White Hart Lane and is rated highly by Villas-Boas.

But the Portuguese boss believes signing the experienced Baines, 28, as competition can only be of benefit to England under-21 star Rose.

Chelsea have also shown interest in Baines, whose current Goodison deal ends in 2015, but Jose Mourinho sees Ashley Cole as his first-choice left-back for at least the next two seasons.
