Napoli Want to Raid Liverpool’s Midfield in January

Recently appointed Napoli head coach Rafa Benitez is planning on returning to his former club Liverpool in order to sign defensive midfield player Lucas Leiva when the winter transfer window opens again finally for business in the new year, according to reports in the Sun.

The highly rated Brazil international was actually bought for the Merseyside giants by Benitez himself, with Lucas first arriving at Anfield from Brazilian outfit Gremio in July 2007 for a transfer fee of just £5 million.

And in the intervening six-year period, the holding midfield player has gone on to establish himself as being an absolutely vital member of the Reds first team, with the 26-year-old having appeared in a total of 223 matches in all competitions for Liverpool to date, scoring only six times in the process, including a solitary strike in his 158 Premier League outings for the club.

However, with a contract on Merseyside that now runs until June 30 2017, it will not prove easy for Benitez to be able to lure the Brazilian to Southern Italy come the turn of the year, especially if his employers do not want to do business with the Serie A side.
