Chelsea in talks over Jackson Martinez transfer from Porto as they search for a striker

Chelsea have held secret talks about a £30million January move for Porto striker Jackson Martinez.

Nicknamed Cha Cha Cha because of his silky movement on the pitch, 27-year-old Martinez is one of the hottest properties in Europe.

Colombia star Martinez’s agent, Henrique Pompeo, has been to London for discussions with Roman Abramovich’s trusted lieutenant Marina Granovskaia.

Porto are ready to sell in January if they fail to progress to the Champions League’s last 16 – and they face having to win away to unbeaten group leaders Atletico Madrid in their final game to do that.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is desperate to improve his striking options, and would like another Colombian – Monaco’s Radamel Falcao.

Falcao was on Mourinho’s wanted list when he returned to the Blues in the summer and he was confident of getting a deal done with Atletico Madrid, but Monaco’s millions won the transfer tug-of-war.

The west Londoners still have not given up on signing him, and it would appear international teammate Martinez is a back-up option.

Chelsea are desperate to bring in a striker to boost their push for the Premier League title, even if they have to sign someone already cup-tied in Europe.

Fernando Torres has shown only flashes of his best form, while Samuel Eto’o – injured and taken off on a stretcher in Tuesday’s loss to Basel – has been a stop-gap with Romelu Lukaku on a season-long loan at Everton.

Martinez is under contract until 2016 and has a buy-out clause of £35m, but Chelsea are hopeful the actual price will not be that high.

Martinez scored 34 goals last season.
