Arsenal Fought Hard to Win 2-0 Over Southampton

Arsene Wenger was delighted after seeing his Arsenal side go four points clear at the top of the Premier League, following their 2-0 win over Southampton.

Olivier Giroud’s brace ensured the hard-fought success, with the Gunners only making sure of the three points in the closing stages.

And Wenger believes the three points will be key at the end of the season, after being forced all the way by Mauro Pochettino’s Saints .

The Frenchman said: “I’m very happy because we were against a good team and they showed why they made good results before.

“They are a good team and if they had won today they would have been level with us at the top of the league, so that shows how good they are.

“We couldn’t take our chances but we took advantage of their mistakes. It’s a very good win.”

Giroud gave the hosts the lead in the first half following a calamitous mistake from Southampton goalkeeper Artur Boruc.

The Pole attempted to dribble his way past the pressuring Giroud, only to be caught out as the Frenchman tapped into an empty net.

And the 27-year-old striker added a second to his tally from the penalty spot five minutes from time, after Jose Fonte was deemed to have fouled Per Mertesacker in the area.

The win, which followed Liverpool’s 3-3 draw with Everton earlier in the day, extended the Gunners’ lead, with Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United all in action later this weekend.
